GolfBrain 2.0
These notes describe the upcoming free 2.0 update. Until it is released, the App Store may provide an earlier version.
Where do I start?
In My Bag, add your clubs and normal carry distances. In Settings, set your home reference location and altitude where those distances apply, then choose yards or meters. Allow location access when you use the app so it can obtain current conditions and altitude.
What do Stock, Here, and Drift mean?
Stock is your normal carry distance. Here is the estimated carry for your current altitude and conditions. Drift estimates the lateral wind effect relative to your shot direction. Point the phone along your intended shot and use Lock aim to set that direction.
These are estimates for recreational use. They do not model your draw, fade, or roll, and local conditions can differ from the weather provider’s report.
Why are altitude or adjusted distances missing?
The app needs a fresh, accurate location and reliable altitude. Check Settings → Privacy & Security → Location Services on your iPhone and allow precise location while using GolfBrain. A clear view of the sky can help. Adjusted distances stay unavailable when the required readings are missing.
Does GolfBrain need an internet connection?
An internet connection is needed to refresh OpenWeather conditions. Your bag is stored locally. Cached weather may be shown between refreshes; check the observation time before relying on it.
How does the Watch app receive my bag?
Install the companion GolfBrain app on your paired Apple Watch and open GolfBrain on both devices. The iPhone shares your bag and current estimates through Apple’s paired-device connection. Updates can be delayed while either device is disconnected or inactive.
Where is my data stored?
Version 2.0 stores your bag and settings on your device and shares the play data with your paired Apple Watch. It has no GolfBrain account or cloud club-storage service. A new-device transfer through a GolfBrain account is no longer available. Removing the app can remove its local data; ordinary Apple device backup behavior depends on your settings.
What was removed in 2.0?
Drive measurement, the Learning Center, external sensor connections, subscriptions, cloud club storage, and account-based device transfers. The app keeps your bag, altitude and weather estimates, wind guidance, round timing, and the Watch companion.
Still using GolfBrain 1.x?
The original GolfBrain guide (PDF, version 1.x) describes the earlier app. Its account, subscription, sensor, drive, and Learning Center instructions do not apply to 2.0. The original privacy policy remains available.
If you used a GolfBrain account, removing the app or upgrading is not a request to delete older cloud records. Use the older app’s Delete My Data option or email the privacy contact below about a data request.
Sun & Moon
Built for photographers, hikers, hunters, and anyone whose plans involve natural light. The current App Store version runs on Apple Watch. Version 1.1, including an iPhone companion and the revised display shown on this site, is upcoming; these new features are not yet available from the App Store.
How do I get local sun and moon times?
Allow location access on your Apple Watch. The app calculates sun, moon, and twilight information on the device for its current location and time zone. Watch-face complications may refresh on the schedule allowed by watchOS.
In the upcoming 1.1 update, the iPhone companion will show the same information using the phone’s own location. Each device will need its own location permission. Latitude and longitude at the bottom of the main screen will show the location used for the calculations.
Will I need the iPhone app to use my Watch?
No. The Watch app will continue to run independently when the iPhone companion arrives in version 1.1. The phone will not need to be open for the Watch to calculate its readings.
What will the weekday next to moonrise or moonset mean?
In version 1.1, each row will show the local weekday and time, such as “Mon 12:13 AM.” An event earlier today will stay visible after it has passed. If there is no corresponding event on today’s calendar date, the app will look ahead up to seven days and show the next event’s weekday and time. “Unavailable” will mean no event was found in that range.
A moonset shortly after midnight belongs to the following calendar day, even if you think of it as the same night.
What if location or readings are missing?
Check Location Services and the app’s location permission in your device’s Settings, then reopen the app. In the upcoming update, use Try Again after a location error, or Open Settings on iPhone if permission is denied. Allow each device to obtain a current location before checking its readings.
Will the companion send my location to a server?
No. Both devices will calculate the astronomical information locally using Apple’s location services. The iPhone companion will not add an Alpenlogic account, location-history service, or location transfer between the phone and Watch. An internet connection will not be needed for the astronomical calculations themselves.
